Beyond Resident Series
How fit are you, really?
The Beyond Fitness Index measures five areas of fitness and brings them together into one score from 0 to 100, compared with published research on people of your age and sex. You see where you stand, and what you can do about it.
The five areas
- Cardiovascular fitness: a brisk one-mile walk, on a treadmill.
- Strength: grip strength, which tracks the strength of your whole body.
- Muscular endurance: push-ups.
- Mobility and balance: getting down to the floor and back up, and standing on one leg.
- Body composition: your waist, measured against your height.
Why it matters
In a study of 122,000 adults, cardiorespiratory fitness was one of the strongest predictors of long-term health of anything measured. Grip strength, balance and the ability to get up off the floor have each been linked to long-term health in large studies too. Every one of them can be improved with the right training.
What you get
- Your score from 0 to 100, and your band.
- A score for each of the five areas, so you see your strongest and weakest.
- The one area to work on first, and what to do about it, explained in a short results meeting within a week.

- Small groups of up to four, on a Saturday, in your residents’ gym. About an hour.

The Beyond Fitness Index compares your results with published research. It is a measure of fitness, not a medical assessment. It does not diagnose anything, and it does not predict how long any one person will live.
